New York City is set to open its first ever “spa city” next year, and this week, the new citywide spa, which will be open to the public starting August 15, is expected to hit the scene.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced plans in December to make the city’s first-ever “spacelab” a reality, with the goal of attracting more people to the city to use its citywide network of more than 200 hotels, restaurants and recreational facilities.
The plan was hailed as a “game-changer” by the Mayor, who said at the time the new program would offer residents and tourists the option to spend less time outside and more time inside with more time for “spas and wellness.”
But it was met with a range of reactions, from skepticism about whether the program would actually work, to some of the program’s partners saying it would only be a temporary solution.
A spokesperson for the New York Health Department said the city has “received a number of questions regarding the program, including concerns about its impact on the citywide health care system.”
The spokesperson did not give a timeline for when the program might open in New York.
The spa will be located in the new Midtowne Park neighborhood of Manhattan, which is already home to some hot spots like the Rockefeller Center and Central Park.
The program will also offer the opportunity for residents and visitors to use their complimentary spa time outside to spend time at the pool, play in the sun, or take a dip in the ocean.
In addition, the city will allow people who rent the facilities to use them as “spaces for physical activities,” like yoga or pilates, while residents can rent their space for yoga classes, or sit in the hot tub with their pets.
The program will cost $5 per person for up to two hours of use.
The city has also committed to offering free spa visits for the next two years, which could help address some of its health issues with obesity.
The new spa will offer two types of spaces, including a pool area for families and an indoor spa for anyone, but the city is also working on plans to build a third space on the grounds of the new Javits Center.
